Whole Wheat Grain for Mushroom Spawn

Whole wheat is a trusted spawn grain that hydrates quickly, shakes easily and delivers balanced protein, starch and minerals for vigorous mycelial growth.

Why Wheat?

• Medium‑size kernels give plenty of inoculation points without compacting.
• Natural gluten helps kernels stay separate after sterilisation for easy shaking.

Basic Preparation Guide

1. Soak 12 hours in clean water (add 2 g gypsum per litre to buffer and reduce clumping).
2. Simmer 10 minutes until kernels are hydrated but still firm.
3. Drain and steam‑dry 30 minutes; surfaces should feel dry while the core stays moist.
4. Load and sterilise jars or filter bags for 90 minutes at 121 °C.

1kg resealable pouch, enough for about 2.4 L hydrated spawn grain (four 600 mL jars).

Tips

• Shake jars at 25 percent colonisation to speed up even growth.
• Blend 50 : 50 with millet if you want smaller kernels and more inoculation points.
• Store dry grain sealed, cool and out of direct sunlight; shelf life is at least one year.
