Gymnopilus luteofolius Spores

Also known as the Yellow-Gilled Gymnopilus, Gymnopilus luteofolius is a widely distributed mushroom notable for its vibrant colouration and growth in dense clusters on dead wood. This species is characterised by a rusty orange spore print and a bitter taste. The cap can display a remarkable transformation of colours, starting as purplish to reddish and fading to yellow as it matures, and may sometimes exhibit a bluish-green stain. It is found across North America, typically fruiting from summer to autumn on the deadwood of conifers and hardwoods.

These spores were taken from a wild specimen and may contain the odd ‘hitchhiker’. We will not replace any speciality Gymnopilus spores or take a contamination report, as it is assumed the buyer is experienced and knows how to work with potentially contaminated microscopy spores. If inexperienced with microscopy, we recommend Psilocybe cubensis spores instead.

Background

This species was first described in 1875 by the American mycologist Charles Horton Peck as Agaricus luteofolius. It was later renamed Pholiota luteofolius in 1887 before the German-born mycologist Rolf Singer gave it its current name in 1951. Gymnopilus luteofolius is one of about fourteen species in the Gymnopilus genus known to contain psilocybin, although its bitter taste often deters interest. In Japan, it is sometimes referred to as “waraitake,” which translates to “laughing mushroom.”
