Millet Grain for Mushroom Spawn

Millet’s small, round kernels give you thousands of inoculation points in every jar or bag, helping mycelium leap off and colonise bulk substrate faster than larger grains.

Why Choose Millet?

• Tiny kernels disperse easily, creating an even spawn layer when mixed into bulk.
• Smooth husk resists bacterial “stickiness,” so jars shake cleanly at 20–30 % colonisation.
• Higher magnesium than rye or wheat—supports enzyme activity and vigorous growth.
• Triple cleaned and dust‑reduced; no need to winnow chaff before soaking.

Basic Preparation Guide

1. Soak 6–12 hours in clean water (add 2 g gypsum per litre to buffer pH and prevent clumping).
2. Simmer 10 minutes until kernels swell but remain firm—do not overcook.
3. Drain & steam‑dry 20–30 minutes; surface should feel dry while the centre stays moist.
4. Load & sterilise in jars or filter bags for 90 minutes at 15 psi (121 °C).

1kg resealable pouch—yields approximately 2.5 L of fully hydrated spawn grain (enough for five 500 mL jars).

Tips

• Shake jars as soon as they’re cool to loosen kernels that may have compacted during sterilisation.
• Combine 50 : 50 with rye or wheat if you want both high inoculation points and a heavier grain.
• Store the dry grain sealed and cool; shelf life is at least one year.
