Perlite for Mushroom Cultivation

Perlite is a lightweight, porous volcanic rock that holds water on its surface. A 2–3 cm layer in the base of a fruiting chamber keeps humidity high and air moving, giving mushrooms the moist microclimate they need to form healthy pins and flushes.

Why Perlite?

  • Absorbs and slowly releases moisture to maintain 90 %+ relative humidity.
  • Porous structure improves air exchange and discourages stagnant pockets.
  • Inert, mould‑resistant and reusable after a rinse and re‑hydration.

Basic Use

  1. Hydrate: Soak perlite until saturated, then drain until no water drips.
  2. Layer: Spread 2–3 cm in a monotub, SGFC or grow tent tray.
  3. Maintain: Mist walls or lid when perlite surface looks dull‑dry.

Pack Sizes

  • 1L pouch – enough for a small tabletop fruiting chamber.
  • 5L bag – fills a standard SGFC or medium monotub.

Tips

  • Do not let water pool under the perlite; drain excess before use.
  • Check humidity with a hygrometer and adjust misting as needed.
  • Rinse and sun‑dry perlite between grows to keep it clean.
