Rye Grain for Mushroom Spawn

Clean whole rye is the benchmark grain for gourmet mushroom spawn. Each kernel hydrates evenly, stays separate after sterilisation and delivers protein, carbohydrates and trace minerals that fuel strong mycelial growth.

Why Rye?

• Kernels remain free‑flowing, making it easy to shake and share spawn.
• Balanced nutrients support fast colonisation without going overly rich.
• Low endosperm exposure compared with cracked corn, reducing bacterial risk.
• Screened, dust‑reduced and triple cleaned, ready for soaking and hydration.

Basic Preparation Guide

1. Soak 12–18 hours in clean water (add 2 g gypsum per litre to buffer).
2. Simmer 10 minutes until grains are hydrated but still firm.
3. Drain and steam‑dry 30 minutes; surface should feel dry, kernels still moist inside.
4. Load, jar or bag, add 2 g calcium carbonate per kg if desired, then sterilise 90 minutes at 15 psi.

Pack Sizes

• 1 kg pouch – yields about 2.4 L hydrated grain.
• 5 kg sack – fills roughly ten 1 L spawn jars or four medium Unicorn bags.

Tips

• Shake jars at 25 % colonisation for even mycelial spread.
• Add 1 % calcium nitrate if you need extra nitrogen—trial first.
• Store grain cool and dry; sealed, it keeps for 12 months.
