Sodium Hydroxide (Caustic Soda) for Mushroom Cultivation

Food‑grade sodium hydroxide pellets (≥ 98 % purity) give you a fast, high‑pH solution for deep‑cleaning grow gear or for alkaline cold‑soaks that knock out moulds and bacteria without heat.

Main Uses

• Alkaline cold‑pasteurisation: 5–10 g NaOH per litre of water (0.5–1 % w/v) raises the pH above 12, sanitising straw, coco or wood chips in 12–18 hours.
• Equipment & tub wash: 20 g per litre (2 % w/v) dissolves stubborn mycelial films and nutrient residues; rinse thoroughly with clean water.
• Agar jar clean‑out: A hot 2 % solution liquefies spent agar so jars can be scrubbed and reused.

Why Sodium Hydroxide?

• Raises pH higher and faster than lime—effective even in cold water.
• Pellet form is easy to weigh, store and dissolve.
• Degrades to sodium carbonate and water after use; no lingering biocides.

1 kg HDPE screw‑top jar with desiccant sachet to keep pellets dry.

Handling & Safety

1. Wear nitrile gloves, goggles and long sleeves—NaOH is corrosive.
2. Always add pellets to water, never water to pellets (exothermic reaction).
3. Label solutions clearly and store out of reach of children and pets.
4. Neutralise spent solutions with vinegar prior to disposal.
